iSpring Learn

Make on-the-job training easier than ever with iSpring Learn

There's no need to create paper-based checklists and evaluate training results manually. Let iSpring Learn handle the routine, saving your time and effort.

Step 1. Create an observation list

To begin on-the-job training, first create an observation checklist. Enter the topic and location where the observation will take place. Then, add the competencies you'll assess and define clear criteria for measuring them.

Step 2. Schedule an OJT session

Start the session right away, or schedule it for later by setting the date, time, and duration. Select an observer and a new employee — all the participants will get an email and push notification on their smartphones about the scheduled OJT session and a reminder 24 hours in advance.

Step 3. Conduct a session

Observe an employee's performance and complete the checklist, noting how they meet the job requirements. Leave comments about the employee's strengths and areas for improvement to prepare for the next session. After completing the training, the employee can view a detailed report with instructor feedback.

With the supervisor dashboard, you can track individual employee results, get an overview of your team's general performance, or even compare the results of different departments. Define low and high scores, use sorting for easy searches, and export data as an Excel spreadsheet.

FAQs on on-the-job training software

What is on-the-job training?

On-the-job training (OJT) is a practical approach where employees get hands-on experience while performing their actual work tasks. During OJT, a newcomer is paired with an experienced team member that observes the newcomer's performance, noting strengths and areas for improvement. With the On-The-Job Training module in iSpring Learn, supervisors and observers can develop targeted checklists for various job roles and tasks, lead observation sessions to assess adherence to work standards, provide feedback to all team members, and monitor their progress.

Why do I need a LMS for on-the-job training?

With a learning management system (LMS), you don't have to create and print paper-based observation checklists, manually analyze employee performance results, provide verbal feedback, or schedule additional meetings. Having an LMS at your disposal makes it easy to launch on-the-job training for multiple departments. You can track how managers are training new hires, identify those ready to work, and determine who needs more observation. It's also easier to keep the results of all observation sessions in one place and review them as needed. You can also create and launch learning and development (L&D) programs that go beyond on-the-job training to help your employees acquire new skills and grow as professionals.

I don't have training materials. How can I create them quickly?

One major benefit of iSpring Learn is that you don't need extra authoring tools to start workplace training. The platform includes a course builder that lets you create SCORM courses directly on the system. It only takes minutes to develop courses, and you don't need any specific skills beforehand. The LMS also comes bundled with a robust authoring tool, iSpring Suite, which works directly in PowerPoint and allows you to create various eLearning content and seamlessly upload to the platform.
