How to start getting results through eLearning

POP QUIZ!

Name something that:

  • Businesses don’t believe in
  • Employees despise
  • Doesn’t do what it’s supposed to
  • Businesses spend billions on globally

Do you know what it is?

It’s eLearning!

Over the past 10-15 years, rapid authoring tools and a myriad of online tools have made eLearning more accessible (and amazing) than ever. Yet, so much of what L&D produces still delivers so little in the form of business results. How is it possible that we can do more than ever before and yet we’re still not getting anything out of it? And, more importantly, why do businesses keep investing in it?

When we examine the state of the eLearning industry we see three (3) significant challenges:

  1. A Downward Spiral. A lack of results → leads to less support → leads to less budget → leads to a lack of results.
  2. The Wrong Focus. An emphasis on the learners’ experience, instead of business results.
  3. Stand Alone Solutions. Treating a 30-minute course as the solution to a systemic issue.

Let’s examine each of these issues and discuss how to interrupt the spiral, refocus in the right direction, and build complete solutions that solve real business problems.

Clint Clarkson
Founder
Clint Clarkson is just another victim who accidentally stumbled down the rabbit hole of corporate learning and development. Over 15 years later, making stops in the banking and transportation, he’s become quite fond of the oddities and challenges L&D has to offer. While he’s known for being upbeat, positive, and enthusiastic, Clint is still easily offended by comic-sans, bullet points, and the excessive use of buzzwords. His current focus is the design and development of digital knowledge experiences (a.k.a. eLearning). His passion project is the L&D Scenes comic series.

Sound and Motion: Film school techniques for live-action video learning

You’ve started using live-action video at work. Perhaps you’ve used it in the past but weren’t happy with the results. If this is you, you’ll agree that using live action to tell a story with the goal of educating the viewer is challenging. A video can just as easily distract or confuse as it can inspire and educate. And it can be expensive to get it wrong!
